The Bulgarian Socialist Party is expected to decide Saturday on whether to expel former Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov.

Earlier this month, Parvanov announced his plans to form an alternative left-wing list for the upcoming European elections in May, triggering fears that the Bulgarian socialists are facing a rift.

BSP officials have strongly criticized Parvanov’s move, calling him and those party members who joined his ABV movement “traitors.”

Key BSP official Rumen Petkov may also be expelled for joining ABV, as the socialist party gathers for a national council sitting on Saturday.

On Tuesday, after a meeting of the Executive Bureau of BSP, the Deputy Chairman of the party, Dimitar Dabov, explained that under the Party Code all BSP members who have voiced support for ABV have "placed themselves outside the scope of the Code," which equaled self-expulsion and the latter is the position adopted unanimously by the entire party leadership.

ABV’s EU election list will be led by Ivailo Kalfin, a high-profile MEP who defected from BSP on January 13 citing major political differences with party leader and PES president Sergey Stanishev.
