Bulgarian Supreme Court Rejects Mobile Traffic Cameras as Evidence

Bulgaria's Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) ruled that evidence gathered with mobile traffic cameras contradicts the Traffic Law.

The motives are yet to be officially published, but according to Bulgarian media, the main reason is that the photographing of traffic violations must be done without human interference.

The court argues that the mobile traffic cameras mounted in police cars can be manipulated even with a simple mobile phone and there is no guarantee that the photographs are not taken when the car is moving, which could distort the readings.

The interpretative ruling came upon a request by the Minister of Justice Zinaida Zlatanova, who asked the SAC if the Traffic law allows the use of mobile cameras, as it is not mentioned in detail. For this reason some of the courts didn't accept footage from the mobile cameras as evidence, while others did.
