Former Bulgarian ruling party, center right GERB approves of Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev's proposal for a national referendum on the voting system in the country.

"If parliament does not vote in support of the referendum, GERB will initiate a petition for it among citizens," stated party leader and former Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov.

"I am in principle a supporter of referendums. And the voting system is a special topic on which Bulgarian citizens need to get heard," added he.

Wednesday Plevneliev announced his initiative, which envisions three questions: on the introduction of majority-vote MP seats, mandatory voting and electronic voting.

The proposal has to be approved by parliament to be held as a referendum. A citizens' petition must gather at least 200,000 signatures to initiate a referndum.

Plevneliev's idea is for the national poll to be held together with May European Elections 2014.

Before being elected president in late 2011, Plevneliev served as Regional Development Minsiter in the Borisov cabinet (2009-13).
