Serbia to Hold Early Parliament Elections in March

Serbia will hold early parliamentary elections on March 16, in a move targeted at legitimizing the future reforms.

The ruling Progressive Party, whose popularity is growing, will look to form a majority in the new cabinet, which would make EU-geared reforms easier to carry out, EurActiv reports.

The Socialist Party of Serbia, the smaller coalition partner, fears the early elections could jeopardize their current position. Nonetheless, Prime Minister Ivica Dacic, who is from the Socialist Party, said he will not obstruct the decision for the vote.

The Serbian Progressive Party, which has taken steps towards solving cases of crime and corruption, has a current rating of just over 40%. Its leader, and current Deputy PM, Aleksandar Vucic, is the favorite to replace Dacic.

Serbia's EU membership talks will most likely be the main topic in the election campaign.
