A committee has been appointed and is checking the main Sofia University building for possible damages sustained during its second student occupation.

The news was announced Tuesday by the President of the University, Prof Ivan Ilchev, after the blockade was lifted.

Ilchev insist the campus has suffered losses due to the antigovernment occupation and public property has been invaded. He stated that because of the latter, the academic leadership of the school had to check the premises for damages, while lawyers will decide on a possible legal claim.

The President stressed he will undertake serious measures to restrict further occupation of the building because he had realized that there are people in Bulgaria who do not hesitate to use everything, including college campuses, for their political goals.

According to him, Sofia University had much better security before Simeon Djankov, Finance Minister in the previous government of the center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party (GERB), cut its budget by 35%.

"Good security requires money," Ilchev concluded.

It was announced meanwhile that the school has already hired a new security company on Tuesday.

A total of 16 exams have been cancelled and will have to be rescheduled over the second occupation, which was again staged with demands for the resignation of the Socialist-endorsed government, dissolution of the Parliament and snap elections.

It was lifted only after 3 days, mainly because it received low public support, unlike the first one.
