Bulgarian Renegade Socialists Could Get MEP - Survey

The separate European Parliament elections list recently announced by Bulgarian ex President Georgi Parvanov could get 7% of votes, according to an opinion poll by Alpha Research.

As things stand now, the list, to be led by current S&D MEP Ivaylo Kalfin, is set to negatively affect the results of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, show the survey's results.

The Socialist Party could lose some 20% of people who voted for it in general elections May 2013, with some 15% of respondents saying they would vote for the leftists.

Main rivals GERB are supported by 17.8% of people asked in Alpha Research's national survey.

Close to half of people who said they would vote for Parvanov's ABV are supporters of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, with the rest composed of people with centrist and nationalist political beliefs.

According to the opinion poll, most those who moved away from voting for BSP are disappointed with the party's behavior after May elections, or personally with BSP and PES leader Sergey Stanishev.

The Socialists' coalition partner, the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms, comes third with 6.2%, followed by the new rightist Reformist Bloc with 5.2%.

Nationalists Ataka continue to show low support for European Elections 2014, scoring only 2.5% in the survey.

The newly founded Bulgaria without Censoriship party led by former journalist Nikolay Barekov has registered a support of 2.6%.
