Opponents of the Syrian regime refused to meet with representatives of President Bashar al-Assad at the UN headquarters in Geneva on Friday.

The opposition demands that Assad’s delegation first signs up to a protocol calling for a transitional government in the country.

This means the two sides would now each meet separately with a UN mediator, Lakhdar Brahimi.

Brahimi had planned to bring the government and opposition delegations together for a joint meeting to start a negotiating process aimed at resolving nearly three years of conflict in Syria.
