Ukraine's EuroMaidan Rallies Claim Victims

The clashes between protesters and police in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, have been fierce and dramatic throughout Tuesday night.

At least two persons were killed by gunshot wounds, allegedly fired by police officers who were seen taken aim at demonstrators with rifles. A third victim, also a protester, reportedly died from injuries in a fall, according to Kyivpost.com.

Protesters braved heavy snow to remain in Kiev's central square on Wednesday morning, despite warnings from Prime Minister Mykola Azarov that security personnel could use force to disperse demonstrations.

Several hundred demonstrators were estimated to be on the streets by mid-morning, resuming a violent conflict that began on 19 January. The demonstrators threw Molotov cocktails and fireworks at the police officers who responded with stun grenades.

EuroMaidan participants and political opposition leaders held a rally on 19 January to protest new laws that restrict freedom of speech and peaceful protest. The rally turned violent between police and protesters with more than 100 people injured. The standoff is continuing.
