Serbia's Prime Minister Ivica Dacic suggested that recognizing the status of Kosovo is not a necessary prerequisite to entering the European Union.

"The EU accession process is not a matter linked to the status of Kosovo. Our stance with regard to Kosovo's status does not change and was never on the agenda", Dacic told reporters in Brussels.

The Serbian PM noted that the EU itself is divided on the issue of Kosovo, with some member states yet to recognize it. Nonetheless, he made it clear Serbia would continue the dialogue with its neighbor.

Dacic called the start of the EU membership talks, "the most important event for Serbia since the end of WWII".

He said that his people have deserved this moment and expects the talks to be complete by 2018.
