Bulgaria's President Gives Account after Two Years in Office

Market economy is hard pressed by corruption, oligarchy and monopolies, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev said at a conference accounting for two years in office.

"These are all obstacles for investments. We need efficient and independent regulators," President Plevneliev stated.

"Politicians should cease cronyism in the judicial system. They have to work for the people rather than for themselves," he added.

"The first two years of my office as President have gone under the sign of great challenges that we faced for the first time in our latest democratic history, namely: the severest global economy and financial crisis," Bulgarian Head of State commented.

"We have witnessed attempts for an artificial disunion of society. It was a year of mass protests, of the shift of three governments, two parliaments and of strong migration pressure."

"2013 was the year of civil society in Bulgaria. Citizens proved through their actions that a new constructive energy has emerged. Today, it is up to us to use that energy for constructive purposes."

"One of people's demands was the e-government. People ask for transparency," claimed Plevneliev.

"The talks of special investigative means are convenient for many people in Bulgaria, because they shift attention from the most important debate, that of the state of administration, energy, healthcare and democracy in the country."

President Plevneliev will summon the Consultative National Security Council in February regarding the financing of Bulgaria's strategic priorities through EU mechanisms and the EC partnership agreement for 2014-2020.
