Over hundred protesters were injured after the protests in the Ukrainian capital Kiev escalated into street battles with riot police Sunday night.

Some 200 thousand pro-EU demonstrators took the streets in Kiev to rally against new laws that opposition leaders have labelled anti-democratic.

Protesters attempted to overturn two police buses. In response, the officers used tear gas, shock grenades and truncheons.

Boxing champion and opposition politician Vitali Klitschko attended the protest in Independence Square, but later urged demonstrators to stop using violence.

Ukraine's President Viktor Yanukovych has agreed to negotiate with pro-EU protesters and opposition leaders after violent clashes in the capital Kiev.

The anti-government movement began in protest at Yanukovych's decision in late November to pull out of a landmark treaty with the EU, but has expanded to demand his resignation.
