Egypt Holds Key Constitution Referendum

Egyptians have begun voting amid tight security in a two-day referendum on a new constitution.

Thousands of police and soldiers have been deployed across the nation amid security fears that the rising violence in the run-up to the referendum could disrupt balloting.

The new charter aims to replace the constitution passed under Islamist President Mohammed Morsi months before he was ousted by the army.

The charter was drafted by a mostly secular panel set up after the army toppled Mursi in July.

Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, now designated a terrorist group, is boycotting the vote, the BBC informs.
