Arbuzov: Ukraine Seeks to Sign EU Deal in 2014

The Ukrainian government will do everything possible to make sure that the Association Agreement with the EU is signed in 2014, according to Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Arbuzov.

However, Maja Kocijancic, Spokesperson for the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, said Monday that no steps were being taken to draft new documents on the deal with Ukraine, according to reports of ITAR TASS.

Kocijancic announced in London that no date had so far been set for an EU-Ukraine summit in 2014.

She said that work on joint documents with Ukraine would start after a summit was scheduled, adding that it took place once a year as a rule.

Earlier on Monday, Ukrainian opposition demanded the resignation of Interior Minister Vitali Zakharchenko over the use of brutality against protesters

In the most recent wave of anti-government protests in Kiev, nearly 20 people, including former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko were injured in clashes with the police.

Klitschko noted that if the demand for Zakharchenko's departure was not satisfied, his party would block the work of parliament, resuming on Tuesday after the winter recess.

The former world boxing champion has been a prominent figure in the anti-government protests, which began in November, after Ukraine's President Viktor Yanukovych backed out of an Association Agreement with the EU.
