EP Mission to Inspect Conditions at Refugee Centers in Bulgaria

A European Parliament mission will inspect the living conditions in refugee centers in Bulgaria, according to MEP Svetoslav Malinov.

In a Sunday interview for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), Malinov informed that the delegation, scheduled to stay in the country in the period January 20-23, would consist of representatives of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) and Bulgarian MEPs.

The right-winger suggested that Bulgaria's funding would increase in the case of a successful EP mission.

He added that Bulgaria stood a greater chance of obtaining more funding due to the fact that Greece, which Greece took over the rotating European Council presidency at the beginning of the year, had declared that it would give refugee issues priority treatment.

Malinov said that the EP mission was to inspect conditions at refugee centers and to dispel concern that Bulgaria was failing to handle the refugee wave.

He noted that the final program of the visit was not available yet but suggested that the refugee centers in Harmanli and Pastrogor would most probably be inspected.

Malinov informed that the delegation would meet with chairs of organizations directly involved in talks with state institutions, NGOs and the UN and the Red Cross.

He made clear that the delegation would have to draft a document on the identified problems and to offer a solution, adding that "the earlier we show that that we understand where the problems are, the more assistance we will get."

Malinov specified that Bulgaria expected to receive not only financial assistance but also support for the statutory procedures which were cumbersome and torturous for the people who were stuck in a state of uncertainty.
