Some 200 protesting tobacco growers briefly blocked an international road to Turkey near the southern Bulgarian town of Harmanli on Monday.

The protest has been triggered by the delay of the purchase of 'Basma-type' tobacco and the fact that its price has dropped by BGN 2 compared to last year.

Tobacco growers said they feared that the delay of the purchasing process would have a negative impact on the quality of the tobacco, 70% of which had been packed in bales and was ready to be sold.

Protesters told local media that the demonstration was not against the government but against tobacco buying companies. They handed a letter with their demands to representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture.
