Over 10 000 pro-EU protesters gathered Sunday in Independence Square in the heart of Kiev.

For a seventh week in a row, demonstrators vented their anger at President Viktor Yanukovych's refusal to sign a strategic agreement with the EU and seek closer ties with Russia instead.

During the rally, the first one in 2014, opposition leader Vitali Klitschko assured protesters that the people would manage to force the authorities to stop disregarding them.

Klitschko, former boxing champion and leader of the UDAR opposition party, suggested that a new wave of protests would start after the forthcoming Orthodox Christmas and expressed hopes that it would lead to a general strike against the government of President Viktor Yanukovych, according to reports of DPA.

The wave of demonstrations in support of EU integration in Ukraine started on November 21 after the decision of Yanukovych to back out of an Association Agreement with the European Union amid pressure from the Kremlin.
