Five former ministers are undergoing tax inspections due to delay of or failure to submit statements with Bulgaria's National Audit Office.

Four of the ex-ministers under inspection were part of the caretaker government (March 13 – May 28, 2013) and one was part of the center-right GERB government, according to reports of private TV station Nova TV.

Some of the former ministers failed to submit tax statements within the one-month deadline after the expiration of their term in office, while others did not declare their properties.

The National Audit Office requested the National Revenue Agency to conduct an inspection.

Under Bulgarian law, senior public officials must report their assets to the National Audit Office within a month after the expiration of their term in office.

Sergey Ignatov, Education Minister (November 2009 - January 28, 2013) during the center-right GERB government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, delayed his statement by two months.

Among the ministers from the caretaker government, Energy Minister Asen Vasilev and e-government Minister Roman Vasilev also submitted their statements after the statutory deadline.

Former Environment Minister Yulian Popov and Former Defense Minister Todor Tagarev, both of whom were part of the caretaker Cabinet, did not file any declarations.

Apart from the inspections they are undergoing, the former ministers will be fined with BGN 1000 – 1500 for first-time offence, according to reports of the National Audit Office.
