Turkish Army Protests against Ergenekon Trials amid Political Crisis

The chief of staff of Turkey's army has sent a signal to the country's prosecution against alleged falisifications in the high-profile trials against senior army officers in past years.

The moves comes soon after a Yalcin Akdogan, a senior advisor to Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan, came out with the claim that "a conspiracy has been created in the army."

Since end of December, Turkey has been shaken by a high-profile corruption scandal after a prosecution probe, which forced Erdogan to replace close to half of his cabinet.

The army has already released a special statement, saying it will not interfere in politics, but the latest developments have re-opened rifts in Turkey's elite.

While some of his aids have spoken of alleged plots within the armed forces, Erdogan has spoken of a "parallel state created in the prosecution."

It has been the Turkish PM's position since the start of the scandal that the corruption probe is an orchestrated plot against his government.

Friday the Milliet daily reports that the chief of staff of the Turkish army has directed a claim at the Deputy Chief Prosecutor Murat Esen, who is in charge of investigating crimes relating to terrorism.

According to the army, a number of documental violations to defame it have been conducted in the high-profile Ergenekon and Bayloz trials in the late 2000s, which sent scores of officers, including top brass, to jail on sentences for plotting a coup.
