Old Albion's Not-So-Great Expectations

Opinions |Author: Ventsislav Zhekov | January 2, 2014, Thursday // 10:21|  views

As of January 1, Bulgarians and Romanians are now permitted to work in any EU country. This raised some concerns mainly in Germany and the UK, where authorities suggested that the two Balkan countries would all but migrate hand in hand there.

Western Europe's fear of the Balkans is old and perhaps traditional. How so? Is "the old lady" afraid of the "dark Balkan boor" because she does not trust him implicitly, worried by his open and straightforward nature, his traditional and indigenously archaic character. This specimen could seriously jeopardize the Western status quo once he moves in there.

Maybe Europe is afraid of us because we are not the same, because we are "autochthonic", we experience life in a different manner.

However, this is no reason for hatred, fear or any concerns whatsoever. After all, we are human beings too, and we have also made our contribution to the world. It is not like the people of Bulgaria and Romania will all dash to the Albion! As if it was even physically possible.

We need your support so Novinite.com can keep delivering news and information about Bulgaria! Thank you!
