Democrat Bill De Blasio was sworn in as the 109th mayor of New York City early Wednesday.

The oath of office was administered by Eric T. Schneiderman, the attorney general of New York, in a brief ceremony inside the front yard of the mayor’s rowhouse in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

“To everyone, this is the beginning of a road we will travel together,” de Blasio said after the ceremony, according to New York Daily News.

He declared he was “grateful” for the opportunity to serve the city.

“I want to thank especially my neighbors, who can hear us tonight,” he added. "The most wonderful block in all of Brooklyn, and they've been so kind throughout.”

De Blasio's formal inauguration ceremony will take place at noon on Wednesday at City Hall, where former President Bill Clinton will administer the oath of office using a Bible once owned by Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
