Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan approved Tuesday the institutional part of the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), according to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Speaking at the opening of a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Moscow, he informed that the three heads of state had discussed the main development paths for the Eurasian economic integration earlier the same day.

"The heads of state of the troika approved the institutional part of the project for a Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union," he announced, as cited by ITAR-TASS.

Russia's President made clear that the document specified the legal status, organizational framework, aims and functional mechanisms of the EEU.

Putin also explained that the treaty had to be drawn up by May 1, 2014 so that the parliaments of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus could ratify it and it could take effect as of January 1, 2015.
