Bulgaria's EU Commissioner has expressed hopes for a year of political sobering and greater efforts aimed at understanding the reason for the accumulation of pressure in Europe.

In a Saturday interview for Darik radio, the EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response commented that the growing poverty had incited protests all over Europe, as well as the belief that politicians were failing to join forces to address the problem.

"We know that the upcoming EU elections are very likely to not be elections pitting left against right but a face-off of pro-European integration attitudes and people opposed to greater EU integration and even in favor of the disintegration of the EU, and these are all very serious issues," Kristalina Georgieva declared.

Georgieva was optimistic that the people were aware of how critical the current moment was, not only because it was a time of emerging from a serious crisis but also because the world had changed.

She said that the world had grown more dynamic and more competitive over the past years and many places in the world had come to require a different approach to them.

Georgieva also pointed out that nature had become more whimsical.

"In a world which is more dynamic and poses more risks, the ones who stand united win, the ones who have a better sense of national purpose and consensus," the EU Commissioner argued.

"Drafting a common policy on refugees and migration is a task on the agenda of the EU and it will not be an easy one against the backdrop of strengthening anti-immigration attitudes, Georgieva" noted.

She spoke in favor of a policy focused on three aspects: investments in peace and development in the most high-risk regions of the world, serious work on an international level aimed at intercepting human trafficking channels, and a common EU policy based on best practices and mutual help between the Member States.
