Bulgarian MPs honored with a minute of silence in plenary Thursday the six children killed by Bulgarian authorities in a notorious case during the Second World War.

The proposal came from ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party MP Yavor Kuyumdzhiev, who in an address said that such horrific events need to be remembered.

The six children from the village of Yastrebino in northern Bulgaria were summarily executed with 12 other people in a police operation against the anti-regime resistance.

During World War II, Bulgaria was an ally of Nazi Germany.

"The forgetfullness for the children of Yastrebino, the speculations and attempts to distort facts about their execution are lamentable. When history is used for ideological division, when a people forgets its past, then this people cannot build a dignified future," stated Kuyumdzhiev.

"No ideology can justify the forceful taking of a human life - the murder of children is the most cruel and inhuman crime. Therefore we must remember - not in order to condemn or revenge, but in order to learn to live without hate," added he.

The six children of Yastrebino and their relatives were killed 70 years ago, on December 19, 1943.

Once well known to Bulgarians, their tragic fate has fallen into oblivion, but resurfaced recently after a string of protest acts of spraying paint on monuments associated with the communist regime in Bulgaria before 1989.

In the latest such case, a WW II resistance monument in front of the Bulgarian Socialist Party in Sofia was painted pink.

But one of the events that the monument had been conceived as commemorating was precisely the murder of the Yastrebino children.
