Airbus Introduces Groundbreaking Smart Baggage Innovation

The leading aircraft manufacturer Airbus hopes to alleviate the stress of airport luggage check-in with innovative smart baggage system.

Earlier this year Airbus presented the Smart Baggage concept - a joint initiative between Airbus, the telecommunication company T-Systems, and luggage manufacturer Rimowa.

The concept’s specially-designed luggage – called Bag2Go – can be controlled by a smartphone application and integrates electronic tagging for paperless check-in, along with a scale to weigh contents. Additionally, it is equipped for real-time tracking and self-service drop off at the airport.

“At Airbus we care about innovation on the aircraft, we care about safety, and we also care about the overall experience,” said Airbus’ Chief Innovation Officer Yann Barbaux. “We need to think about the aircraft in its complete environment.”

Barbaux said Bag2Go responds to the growing market trend in passenger preferring for self-service baggage systems – with 65% of passengers interested in this airport convenience.

As the first digitally-enabled suitcase, Bag2Go also will offer benefits for airlines as well, including reduced operating costs and turnaround time, fewer lost bags, and an entirely online check-in for customers, he added.

The system will be tested throughout 2014 and airlines are very keen to participate because each lost item of luggage costs them around EUR 73 to retrieve and return to its owner. IATA, which represents the airline industry, says this is approximately EUR 1.8 B in lost revenue.

Bag2Go is still in the prototype phase and Airbus expects it to cost around 20% more than a conventional suitcase.
