Turkish Media Skeptical about Readmission, Visa Deals with EU

Some Turkish media have expressed skepticism over the two key deals signed between the country and the EU.

On Monday, Turkey and the bloc inked a Readmission Agreement, in return for a visa-free travel for Turkish citizens in three years' time.

Commenting on the agreements, the left-leaning BirGun paper has stated that “the visas will not be dropped, but Turkey will be turned into border police.”

According to the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency, the paper has cited experts as saying that refugees entering the EU through Turkey would be declared “illegal immigrants” and will be returned to Turkey.

Another newspaper, Radikal, fears that the visa agreement may end up being vetoed by Greece or Cyprus.

The Readmission Agreement obliges Turkey to accept illegal immigrants who enter the EU via Turkey.

In return, Turkish citizens will be able to travel without visas in the EU in 3 years.
