Bulgarian Watchdog Hints at Power Price Cut in February-March 2014

Opportunities to reduce electricity prices in February or March are being examined, according to Krasimir Yankov, MP from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).

Yankov chairs the standing parliamentary subcommittee on oversight of the State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation (DKEVR).

Speaking Thursday after a sitting of the parliamentary subcommittee tasked with supervising DKEVR, he noted that "there is political will to seek reserves", adding that the government had most probably decided to achieve a power price cut by changing the nighttime power tariff.

DKEVR member Elenko Boyadzhiev, as cited by the BGNES news agency, told journalists that there was no way to introduce the power price cut as of January 1 because the procedure was quite cumbersome.

He did not rule out the option of a power price reduction in February or March but did not specify concrete percentage.

The two rejected allegations that Andzhela Toneva had resigned from the post of DKEVR Chair on Wednesday under pressure to introduce the power price reduction as of 2014.
