Ukrainian security forces have moved in on thousands of protesters in Kiev’s central square in the early hours of Wednesday.

Riot police were seen breaking up the barricades and pushing back the masses, around 1 AM, writes The Wall Street Journal.

There were occasional scuffles between demonstrators and police, but the authorities refrained from using clubs, the way they did on the night of November 30.

By early morning, protesters had returned to Independence Square.

The overnight protests came just hours after EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton and the US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland visited Kiev to hold talks with President Viktor Yanukovich, urging for a peaceful solution to the crisis.

The police said in a statement that they were clearing the square to reopen access to the public.
