Driveless Cars Envisioned on Sofia Subway 3rd Line

Bulgarian capital Sofia's third subway line will be operated with driveless trains.

The information was announced by the Metropolitan Sofia CEO engineer Stoyan Bratoev. Wednesday Bratoev showed his London colleague Mike Brown around Sofia subway.

According to Metropolitan's executive, the current subway cars are slightly outdated, but the third diameter will be operated with new generation cars.

Mike Brown, who is in Bulgaria at the invitation of the British Embassy on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the London Underground, said that EUR 1.8 B annually are invested in the Tube. The money is spent mainly on new cars, signaling systems and stations.

Both Bratoev and Brown expressed satisfaction with the sharing of know-how from their meeting.

The third Sofia subway line will be constructed over the next few years, with project procedures still running.

Since earlier this year, passengers on the Sofia subway are already able to talk on cell phones and surf the web, recalled Metropolitan Sofia.

The services are available on all subway lines, whether passengers are at a station or inside the train car in tunnels.
