Ukraine’s three post-Soviet former presidents have come up with a joint statement of support for the ongoing mass pro-European protests in the country.

"We express solidarity with the peaceful civic actions of hundreds of thousands of young Ukrainians," said a statement from Leonid Kravchuk, Leonid Kuchma and Viktor Yushchenko.

"For the first time, the Ukrainian people have come out on the streets with an apolitical demand that has unprecedented mass support," said the statement, according to The Telegraph.

The three former Presidents condemned "the excessive use of (police force) against peaceful demonstrators" and urged all sides to refrain from further violence.

Protesters are demanding the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovych's government and new elections.
