Bulgaria's Embattled Socialists Would Win Elections Now with 21% - Poll

There is currently a 5% margin between the two major parties in Bulgaria, the ruling left-wing BSP and its arch rival, the center-right, GERB, according to the latest poll.

The poll has been conducted by Sova Haris agency.

If parliamentary elections were to be held now, 21.3% would vote for the ruling, left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, 16.3% - for the formerly-ruling, opposition and centrist Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB.

The election results mean that the two parties, which are arch rivals in parliament, will have 96 against 74 representative in Bulgaria's 240-seat unicameral parliament.

The recently-founded right-wing Reformist Bloc will be represented by 19 MPs.

According to Sova Haris, a few parties, including the liberal, predominantly ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, the populist movement "Bulgaria without Censorship of controversial former TV journalist Nikolay Barekov, and the extremist, nationalist Ataka are seeing a slight rise in support.

However, according to another recent poll, conducted by "Gallup International" in the period October 31 – November 7, the difference between BSP and GERB was 3.3%.
