Bulgarian Roma Trains 'Hundreds of Pickpockets' for UK – Tabloid
Bulgaria in EU | December 2, 2013, Monday // 13:13| viewsBritish tabloid The Daily Mail has published an article claiming that a Bulgarian Roma woman has schooled “hundreds of children” in the art of pickpocketing.
The paper has reported that 77-year-old Donka Panova, a resident of Bulgaria’s Stara Zagora, is “Bulgaria’s grande dame of pickpocketing”, and is known as “Golden Hands.”
Describing the woman as “everyone’s favourite Roma grandmother”, the paper has stated that “many of her graduates are now planning to travel to Britain in the New Year when restrictions on Bulgarian and Romanian migrants are lifted.”
Controversially, the paper has claimed that many members of the Roma sub-group of Kardarashi “do little else but steal.”
A campaign against Bulgaria and Romania’s Roma minority seems to be gaining momentum in British media, as labor market restrictions for citizens of the two EU newcomers are set to be lifted in less than a month.
Last week, British PM David Cameron announced a set of measures which will be aimed at cracking down on the so-called “benefit tourism”, citing fears over mass immigration from Bulgaria and Romania.
