Nearly 100 police officers have been injured in the Kiev clashes between pro-European protesters and riot police.

The demonstrators entered the mayor's office in Kiev, which is now under their control, according to local police.

The leaders of the opposition rejected involvement in the incidents, describing them as a provocation, according to international news agencies, as cited by BGNES.

There were clashes in front of the presidential office as demonstrators tried to use an excavator to break through police lines, while security forces responded with tear gas and flash grenades.

Sunday's rally, which brought together hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians, was driven by anger over the violent dispersal by riot police of a protest on Saturday of pro-EU activists against the decision of President Viktor Yanukovich to not sign a strategic trade deal with the EU and seek to deepen ties with Moscow instead.

On Sunday, the administrative court in Kiev issued a ruling prohibiting rallies on key locations in the city center until January 7.
