Tens of thousands of Ukrainians rallied on Sunday against President Viktor Yanukovich's decision to not sign a landmark trade deal with the EU.

The demonstrators gathered despite a new government ban on protests in the city center until 7 January 2014.

The rally proceeded peacefully until a group of protesters tried to storm the nearby presidential administration building with an excavator, causing riot police to use tear gas, truncheons and flash grenades to disperse them.

Dozens of people injured in the clashes were taken away by ambulance.

The protests gathered steam after Friday, when the Ukraine-EU was to have been signed.

Sunday's demonstration was also fueled by anger over the violent dispersal of several hundred protesters, mostly students, at Independence Square on Saturday morning.
