An earthquake with magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale has killed at least 8 people in southern Iran.

The epicenter of the quake, which struck on Thursday evening, was near the southern city of Borazjan. Medical workers and tent hospitals have already been deployed to the affected zones, reports Euronews.

Iran's sole nuclear power plant in Bushehr lies about 70km away from the epicenter of the earthquake. The plant's CEO reassured that it is strong enough to resist quakes of magnitude 8.

Iran sits on major geological fault lines and is particularly prone to earthquakes.

In April, a 7.8 earthquake near the border with Pakistan killed 35 people.
