Ukrainians in Bulgaria and Bulgarian citizens have called a rally Wednesday in Sofia in support of pro-EU protesters in Ukraine.

Since Sunday, tens of thousands have walked out in Ukrainian capital Kiev and other major cities in protest against the government's decision to freeze work towards signing an imminent Association Agreement with the EU.

The decision, many protesters fear, would move away the country from Europe and cement a lasting influence from Russia.

The Ukrainian government has stated it remains firmly committed to EU integration, and President Viktor Yanukovych has confirmed he will take part in the EU Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius Thursday and Friday.

The Sofia rally, which echoes support rallies in other big European cities, is scheduled for 7 pm Wednesday in front of the President's Office in the Bulgarian capital.

Bulgarian organizers have suggested a bond between Ukrainian protesters and anti-government protesters in Bulgaria, who have been calling for the resignation of PM Plamen Oresharski since mid-June.

According to them, both nations must unite against "ever-hungry oligarchs who forcibly push us towards Russia."
