MPs of Ukraine’s opposition Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party have called for the Prosecution to initiate criminal proceedings against the country’s PM Mykola Azarov.

The opposition union of jailed former PM Yulia Tymoshenko, accuse Azarov of exceeding his powers and authority in his decision to pull out of signing the Association Agreement with the European Union.

The Fatherland Union refers to a law on Ukraine’s internal and foreign policy, under which the country’s political and economic priorities are European integration.

Prime Minister Azarov revealed that he does not rule out the possibility of signing the Association Agreement in 2014, but current conditions were not favorable for such a step.

He also warned against oppositional attempts to exaggerate the government’s decision as a “tragedy”, which aims to “destabilize the political and social situation”.

On Sunday, over 100 000 people rallied in Kiev against the government’s decision to delay its EU Association, claiming the country is under pressure from Russia.

More protests are expected over the coming days.
