The European Union continues to be committed to reach further integration with Ukraine, stated EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule Sunday.

The statement comes in the wake of Thursday's decision by the Ukrainian government to halt preparations for signing an Association Agreement with the EU.

"Our intentions to modernize Ukraine are unwavering," said Fule using Twitter in Ukrainian.

He stressed that the EU's offer is of deepest interest for Ukraine, irrespective of rhetoric to the contrary.

The Ukrainian government cited "security" and "economic" reasons for the decision, adding that the country must strengthen trade and economic ties with Russia and other nations from the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Sunday saw tens of thousands walk out in the streets of Ukrainian capital Kiev to protest the decision, which they see as binding Ukraine to Russia and distancing it from Europe.

People clashed with riot police after some protesters tried ot storm the building of the Council of Ministers.
