The number of unemployed young people in Bulgaria grew by 15 000 over the past five years and already nearly 1/3 of the youth is unemployed.

A discussion on boosting youth unemployment on Thursday made clear that joblessness among young people was growing at a pace which placed Bulgaria second in the EU.

A survey of the Bulgarian Industrial Association (BIA), as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), pointed out other worrying trends, such as the fact that the number of unemployed young people with secondary and higher education kept increasing, as well as the duration of unemployment.

The survey also indicated that 17.5% had never started a job.

Tomcho Tomov, President of the Association for the Development of Human Potential in Industry, emphasized that another problem on the labor market in the country was that nobody in Bulgaria knew what employees were needed in a short-term perspective in the next 5-10 years.

The scarcity of young people seeking vocational education was also cited as a problem.

It was reported that a mere 24% of university graduates managed to find jobs matching their university degree in the 4 years after the completion of the degree.

The participants in the discussion made clear that 19% of the vacancies were occupied by underqualified people, while 50% of the people with university degrees found jobs requiring secondary education.
