Bulgaria's Audit Office to Check Ex-PM Ownership Statements

MPs from the Bulgarian Parliament's Anti-Corruption Committee have decided to order a check by the National Audit Office on the property statements filed by former Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov.

The request will cover the period since Borisov's appointment for Chief Secretary of the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior back in 2001.

Since then, Borisov has served as Sofia Mayor (2005-9) and Bulgarian PM (2009 - early 2013).

MPs decided to order the check based on two signals they received, one alleging that Borisov has owned an offshore company, the other - that he was a co-owner of a firm while Chief Secretary and as such was apparently in a position of conflict of interests.

The signals were filed Wednesday by controversial former journalist-turned-politician Nikolay Barekov.

A joint photo of Barekov with Anti-Corruption Committee chair and nationalist party Ataka leader Volen Siderov upon the filing of the signal raised brows about a possible future coalition between Ataka and Barekov's "Bulgaria without Censorship" movement.

Both Barekov and Siderov claimed that the meeting was purely institutional and did not imply any plans for joint political action.
