Anti-government protesters fought with riot police outside the Bulgarian parliament in the capital city Sofia on Tuesday.

Demonstrators, most of whom were students, called for the Socialist government to step down due to poverty and corruption in the EU's poorest state. This coincides with a three-week sit-in by students at Sofia University.

Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski’s new government has been dubbed the ‘Red Mafia’ for corrupt ties with business groups, similar to accusations that targeted his predecessor Boyko Borisov’s center-right minority government.

Protesters marched through the streets to the parliament, following which several people were arrested for trying to block patrol cars from entering the venue.
