Heating and hot water prices in Sofia will remain unchanged over the next few years, according to Stoyan Tsvetanov, CEO of heating utility Toplofikatsiya Sofia.

In a Monday interview for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), he explained that the price rates would remain unchanged thanks to a waste incineration facility which was expected to reduce the consumption of natural gas of the heating utility by 11%.

He noted that 30% of the customers of the heating utility would use heating energy generated by the household waste incineration facility.

Tsonev said that the central parts of Sofia would use hot water supplies generated solely by the new installation, which was to be completed in 2-3 years, replacing Thermal Power Plant Sofia.

He informed that the facility would deploy a natural gas combined-cycle technology during the heating season.

The CEO of Toplofikatsiya Sofia announced that the estimated cost of the project was around EUR 130 M.

He did not specify what stage the project had reached.

Tsonev said that the debts of the heating utility to state-owned gas supplier Bulgargaz currently amounted to around BGN 33 M, as much as the National Electric Company (NEK) owed Toplofikatsiya Sofia.

As of Monday, Toplofikatsiya Sofia starts switching on the central heating system in the capital in anticipation of a cold spell.
