The European Commission urged Monday Bulgarian political elite and society to oppose the anti-immigrant propaganda that sometimes pushes certain forces or individuals to violence.

The news was reported by the correspondent of the public radio BNR in Brussels, citing EC spokesman for Home Affairs, Michele Cercone. Commenting on recent cases of attacks against foreigners in Bulgaria, he has stressed that immigrants should be seen as people that could be of benefit of European society, economy and culture.

The spokesperson called on all levels of society to fight any propaganda which aims to turn immigrants into an easy target or a scapegoat for other problems.

Cercone has confirmed that the decision about EU financial assistance for Bulgaria to deal with the refugee wave was pending, but did not inform of an exact deadline.
