Bulgarian Student Protesters Demand Educational Reforms

Students are staging partial or full blockades at a number of universities in Sofia and across the country, demanding the resignation of the socialist-led government and the dissolution of Parliament. Photo by BGNES

The Bulgarian Student Occupation movement has issued a declaration with which it proposes new policies in the education sector.

Students from several universities, initiated by the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” have occupied lecture halls for over 2 weeks, as a form of anti-government protest.

“We demand more autonomy for students, as well as their inclusion in the decision making process. Bulgaria’s youth should be given the chance to take responsibility and make choices that affect the community – in short, to be an active participant in the social contract”, reads the students’ declaration.

The open letter goes on to say that education should be emancipatory and produce analytical and critical citizens, better adapted to the needs of the labour market.

The protesting students also call for a more transparent grading process.
