The Philippine Red Cross has released new estimates on the death toll of the Haiyan Typhoon, believed to be over 1 000.

“More than a 1 000 bodies are floating in Tacloban. In Samar, there are about 200 deaths. Validation is ongoing”, said Gwendolyn Pang, Secretary General of the Philippine Red Cross, cited by BBC.

The massive storm with winds of up to 315 km/h swept through villages, causing mudslides, flattening houses, and flooding streets.

Up to 12 million people are believed to be effected by the typhoon. Power lines are cut in many areas and thousands are being evacuated in shelters.

The category 5 typhoon is headed towards the South China Sea, expected to hit China, Vietnam, and Laos later on Saturday.
