The Bulgarian Ambassador to the United Kingdom and the British Foreign Office have discussed the extension of the moratorium on farm land sale to foreigners.

Ambassador Konstantin Dimitrov held a meeting with representatives of the Foreign Office, at which the issue of Bulgaria's decision to extend the moratorium until 2020 was brought up.

The Bulgarian Parliament controversially voted not to lift the ban at the end of 2013, as was envisioned in the pre-EU accession treaty.

The British Foreign Office has been assured that the decision was rather a populist move, which will most likely not hold after it is reviewed by the Constitutional Court, reports Dnevnik.bg.

The Bulgarian Embassy in the UK has refused to share any details of the meeting, but the British Embassy in Bulgaria has confirmed the land moratorium was among the topics of discussion.

If Bulgaria does not reverse its decision, the country could be faced with hefty sanctions from the EU.

The only acceptable way to extend this ban is if all 28 EU member states agree it.
