Former Speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament Georgi Pirinski is reported to be the choice for list leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party for upcoming May 2014 European Elections.

Pirinski, currently vice-chair of the Bulgarian Socialists, is reputed as one of the most outstanding Bulgarian parliamentarians, having served as MP 1990-2013.

He was elected Speaker of Bulgaria's 40th National Assembly, 2005-9.

In the mid-1990s, he served as Foreign Affairs Minister in the ill-fated cabinet of Zhan Videnov, resigning before massive street protests ousted Videnov in early 1997.

The nominations for Bulgarian Socialist Party MEP nominees start Monday and will end on December 20, writes Bulgarian daily 24 Chasa, which names Pirinski as the top favorite.

According to the paper, current BSP and PES leader Sergey Stanishev is another person under consideration, with the possible drawback that Stanishev's presence as Bulgarian MP might be desirable as long as Bulgaria has a Socialist backed cabinet ruling.

Current MEP Iiliyana Yotova and BSP foreign affairs secretary Denitsa Karadzhova are said to be also certain for nomination, writes the paper.
