The relatives of the Syrian boy who was stabbed by unknown assailants on Monday in Sofia have said they want to leave Bulgaria.

Ali, 17, was attacked and stabbed with a knife as he was walking towards the refugee shelter in Sofia’s Voenna Rampa district late on Monday. According to eyewitnesses, the assailants spoke Bulgarian.

There is no danger for the youngster’s life.

Ali’s mother, who lives in the shelter, has told Nova TV that he is to be released from hospital within 10 days.

“17 people live in this room,” she said, showing the TV crew the dire conditions refugees live in.

Refugees have told Nova TV that their children are afraid to leave the premises of the shelter after Monday’s incident.

Bulgaria has seen a surge of xenophobic sentiments over the past few months, with ultranationalist formations staging an anti-refugee hate rally on Sunday in Sofia.

Bulgaria is the gateway to the European Union for refugees fleeing Syria via Turkey, many crossing the border illegally to seek asylum.
