Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved a set of strict anti-terrorism laws ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The new legislation envisions up to 10 years in prison for persons participating in training "aimed at carrying out terrorist activity", as well as an obligation for relatives and acquaintances of militants who carry out acts of terror, to pay damages, reports Radio Free Europe.

Russia is concerned with security leading up to the Olympic games, which start in February. Several militant groups and separatists from the Northern Caucasus region have warned they may cause disturbances during the games.

In October, a suicide bomb exploded in a bus in Volgograd, killing 5 civilians and injuring 38. The bomber, a 30-year old woman from the autonomous Republic of Dagestan, was linked to militant groups in the multi-ethnic region.

Radical Islamist factions from Dagestan and Chechnya are known to be behind several deadly terrorist acts in the country.

The new law will also allow for the seizure of property of relatives and close acquaintances of suspected militants.
