Sanctions for Absent MPs, Propose Bulgarian Nationalists

Bulgaria's nationalist Ataka party proposed a new mechanism in Parliament, where MPs would be sanctioned for their absences in plenary sessions.

"The work of MPs is like the work of any other citizen. If you do not show up to work, you should not expect to receive a salary for it", commented Nikolay Alexandrov from Ataka, in the morning news bloc of TV7.

As it is currently, a parliamentarian in Bulgaria can earn BGN 800 monthly, even if he has not been present in 1 session. Ataka propose that MPs with over 3 monthly absences will have up to 1/3 of their salary cut.

"The excuse of many deputies, that they are working in their constituencies and cannot make it to Parliament are inadequate. They can easily choose days in which there are no plenary sessions, to carry out their other work", added Alexandrov.

The nationalists believe it is not enough to register as present in Parliament, but it is each MP's duty to actively participate in the discussions and votes.
