Chinese authorities have taken into custody 5 suspects in connection with Monday's deadly car crash in Tiananmen Square.

The incident was described as a "terror attack" by the state broadcaster CCTV.

In total 8 people were suspected in the incident, most of them from the Muslim Uighur minority in the region of Xinjiang, western China.

The Chinese Xinhua Agency reported that 5 people died in the crash, 3 of them in the car which caught fire, and another 2 bystanders. Another 38 were injured, including 4 foreign tourists.

Xinjiang is home to the minority Muslim Uighur group, some of whom complain of cultural and religious repression under Beijing's rule, reveals the BBC.

There have been sporadic outbreaks of violence in Xinjiang.

In June, riots in Xingjian's Turpan prefecture, killed 27 people.
